How does Moodle check for AI?
Out of the box, Moodle collects and grades submissions but does not analyse them for AI. Many institutions add a plagiarism plugin, and some connect Turnitin, which can report an AI writing score. The result you see comes from the plugin, with that plugin's own accuracy and limitations.
What this means for you
Two Moodle sites can behave completely differently. One may run Turnitin AI detection, another may run nothing at all. Do not assume Moodle is or is not checking for AI without finding out what is installed.
Limitations to know
- Moodle performs no AI detection itself, so any score comes from a plugin.
- Plugin behaviour and availability vary by institution.
- Where Turnitin is the plugin, its known limits apply.
What you should do
- Ask your tutor or IT team which plagiarism or AI plugins your Moodle uses.
- Treat any score as coming from the underlying plugin and read about that tool.
- Check your own work with a detector before submitting so there are no surprises.
Check your own writing first
Is It AI? is free, with no signup. It highlights the passages that look AI-generated and explains why, so you can revise in your own voice before you submit.
