How does Blackboard check for AI?
SafeAssign produces an originality score based on how much of a submission matches other documents. AI-generated text is usually original in that sense, so SafeAssign tends not to flag it. Where an institution has connected Turnitin to Blackboard, Turnitin's AI writing score may appear, with all of Turnitin's own limitations.
What this means for you
A low SafeAssign score says little about AI use. If you see an AI percentage in Blackboard, it almost certainly came from Turnitin running behind it, so read up on Turnitin specifically rather than on Blackboard.
Limitations to know
- SafeAssign detects matching text, not generated text, so AI writing often passes it.
- Whether any AI detector runs at all depends on the institution's integrations.
- Where Turnitin is connected, its false-positive and 300-word limits apply.
What you should do
- Ask which integrity tools your course uses rather than assuming Blackboard checks for AI.
- Treat a SafeAssign score as a plagiarism signal, not an AI signal.
- Screen your own writing before submitting so you know how it reads.
Check your own writing first
Is It AI? is free, with no signup. It highlights the passages that look AI-generated and explains why, so you can revise in your own voice before you submit.
